5 Proactive Steps to Prevent Tick Bites in Your Yard

Ticks are a common nuisance in many yards and can be a major source of worry for homeowners. Deer ticks are one of the most common types of ticks found in yards, and they can carry a variety of diseases, including Lyme disease so it’s important to take steps to avoid getting bit.

Here are 5 proactive steps to prevent tick bites in your yard:

1. Keep Your Grass Trimmed: Ticks love tall grass, so keep your lawn mowed, trimmed, and manicured. This will make it harder for ticks to hide.

2. Light-Colored Clothing: Ticks are easier to spot on light-colored clothing than on dark-colored clothing. Wear light-colored pants and a long-sleeved shirt when you’re outside to make it easier to spot any ticks on your clothing.

3. Create a Barrier: Create a barrier between your yard and wooded areas. This can be done by installing a fence around the perimeter of your yard or by landscaping with plants that are known to repel ticks.

4. Clean Up Debris: Be sure to remove all fallen leaves, twigs, and other debris from your yard. This will reduce the amount of habitats that ticks can use to hide.

5. Check Your Pets: Pets can transport ticks into the home and onto humans, and the risk of a tick bite is significantly higher for both dog and cat owners. Inspect your pets for ticks after spending time in your yard. If you find any ticks, be sure to remove them with tweezers and dispose of them properly.

By following these tips, you can help reduce the number of ticks in your yard and avoid getting bit. If you have gotten bit by a tick we recommend visiting the CDC’s website for more information.
